Bridging Attempts Fail to Solve Language Problems |
In spite of the millions of dollars, pounds, roubles, yen, etc., spent annually on translating documents, interpreting speech at conferences, and learning other languages, these "bridging crutches" are not even beginning to solve the world's language problems.

Computers were programmed to provide translating "dictionaries," and as computing power grew proper translation programmes were devised.
Some of these programmes may be bought on Compact Disc (CD), and some through the Internet.
Free automatic translating programmes on the Internet are still in very crude stages of development (some cruder than others), but they have started to help people of various languages to communicate.
Poverty prevents millions and millions of people from accessing knowledge locked in other languages, unless they either learn one of the world's "popular" languages, or wait for someone to translate or interpret into their own language.
For a fraction of the huge costs of interpreters, translators, and computer programmes, the adoption of a world-wide "second language" like Esperanto could solve nearly all these problems and reduce the misunderstandings, and the costs, remarkably.
If every child in every school (remembering that some countries only have schools for a small percentage of children) in the world was taught Esperanto every day, within 20 years much of the world's language problem would be disappearing.
Within about 40 years the vast majority of people would not have a serious language problem if they were dealing with people whose native language differed from their own.

The program is a fully functioning stand-alone E-mail client that does everything an ordinary E-mail program does. In addition the programme is capable of editing Multilingual E-mail messages. The basic idea behind LingoMAIL is to create the message in a special format (MLX - Multi Lingual eXtended), and to send with the message a small viewer program (about 110Kb) as an attachment. In addition to transferring Internet E-mail (WebMail), the program is very efficient in transferring E-mail messages internally over the office LAN (LanMail). Unfortunately, LingoMAIL did not work with Apple Macintosh computers. |

Lotus Claims Web Language Breakthrough --
DUBLIN- Lotus Ireland, a subsidiary of International Business MachinesCorp., said it has developed new software that will allow people speaking different languages to communicate across the Web.
The new system, called Lotus Translation Services for Sametime (LTSS), translates Web chat and communications as typed in real time, and will go on sale in September [2000], Lotus Ireland said.
"We are delighted that Dublin was at the forefront of something which has major
implications for the development of the World Wide Web," Mark Wallace, head of the development team, said in a statement.
The Sametime product would open up the Internet as a truly global, multilingual vehicle for the first time, he added.
The software employs Java technologies, and the global target market includes businesses, government agencies, service providers, or any organisation
with a dispersed workforce or a need to work with remote colleagues or partners,
Lotus said.
The software was developed by a team of 250 people -- half of the Dublin-based Lotus workforce. -- Reuters . See newsitem at: http://www.informationweek.com/story/IWK20000621S0001. Visit Lotus at: http://www.lotus.com/world/ireland.nsf "Fáilte - Welcome"
