   UNITED STATES: Two studies of the United States Roman Catholic Church said that 10,667 children said they were molested by priests from 1950 to 2002. One report, by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York, revealed that the child sexual abuse involved 4,392 priests or 4 percent of U.S. RC clergy, and was probably an undercount.
   This study found reports of abuse peaked with the ordination class of 1970, from which one in 10 priests was eventually accused of abuse.
   Most victims were male, mainly boys 11 to 14 years old.
   $572 million had been paid in damages to abuse victims, including $85m from Boston Archdiocese , which had 7% of its clergy accused.
   The statistic of at least 4% nationally differs markedly from the figure of "less than 1 percent" offered in 2002 by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, head of the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
   A second report said that much of the blame must be placed on the higher-ups.
   And, Barbara Blaine, president of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests [SNAP], said: "They want us to think it's all about a tiny group of bad-apple priests long ago. ... It's about the bishops, ... It's about the enablers, not the abusers."
   The recommendations included greater accountability of Church leaders, better interaction with civil authorities, and more meaningful participation by Church members.    [COMMENT: Cardinal Ratzinger was later elected Pope, taking the name Benedict XVI.  Discounting the number of sinners by 75 per cent was a good recommendation for promotion, it seems! National Flag Assn.  [Contract with God, not with Sydney Archdiocese!!!] AUSTRALIA - JOHN Andrew Ellis says he was a high-flying lawyer at Baker&McKenzie when memories of childhood sexual abuse resurfaced and ruined his career. ... he was unable to manage staff. ... this problem stemmed directly from 12 years of sexual abuse inflicted by a now deceased Catholic priest, Aidan Duggan. But the church argues it cannot be held liable for any damages claim because Duggan was not employed by the Sydney Archdiocese. Rather, priests have "a contract with God" and not with their employer. LOUIS (MO) - A Catholic seminary in St. Louis will be among the first in the country to be visited by Vatican officials seeking evidence of homosexuality. Bishop Michael Burbidge of Philadelphia will lead a five-member team that will visit Aquinas Institute of Theology Sept. 25-29, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Friday. United States of America flag; Mooney's MiniFlags  Grand jury harshly criticizes Archdiocese for hiding clergy sexual abuse. PHILADELPHIA (PA) - A Philadelphia grand jury this morning issued a scathing critique of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia, saying its former archbishops and other leaders concealed and facilitated clergy sex abuse of children for decades. The grand jury, which investigated the archdiocese for more than three years, concluded that at least 63 priests - and probably many more - sexually abused hundreds of minors over the past several decades. ... the two previous archbishops, Cardinals John Krol and Anthony J. Bevilacqua ... "excused and enabled the abuse" and put the legal and financial interests and moral reputation of the archdiocese ahead of protecting the children entrusted to its care.    WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES -- A federal appeals court ruled that a lawsuit can move forward against the Vatican involving three men who claimed to have been sexually abused when they were children by priests in the Archdiocese of Louisville, Ky.
   However, the lead counsel to the Vatican in this case said the ruling handed down by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Nov. 24 also presents significant challenges for the attorneys representing the three men in proving the Vatican is liable for damages.
   Louisville attorney William F. McMurry has brought what is believed to be the first clergy sexual abuse suit that names the Vatican as the sole defendant. [Posted by Kathy Shaw at 12:39 PM]

• 2009 regarding 1950s -- Bishops were warned of abusive priests

  - 1950s warning to RCC.
   National Catholic Reporter, ; By Tom Roberts, Mar. 30, 2009
   {Copies of letters Fitzgerald exchanged with U.S. bishops and one pope.}
   UNITED STATES – As early as the mid-1950s, decades before the clergy sexual-abuse crisis broke publicly across the U.S. Catholic landscape, the founder of a religious order that dealt regularly with priest sex abusers was so convinced of their inability to change that he searched for an island to purchase with the intent of using it as a place to isolate such offenders, according to documents recently obtained by NCR.
   Fr. Gerald Fitzgerald, founder of the Servants of the Paracletes, an order established in 1947 to deal with problem priests, wrote regularly to bishops in the United States and to Vatican officials, including the pope, of his opinion that many sexual abusers in the priesthood should be laicized immediately.
   Fitzgerald was a prolific correspondent who wrote regularly of his frustration with and disdain for priests "who have seduced or attempted to seduce little boys or girls." His views are contained in letters and other correspondence that had previously been under court seal and were made available to NCR by a California law firm in February.    Enough has been listed here to show that various religions have a serious problem understanding the correct way to deal with serious crimes by their clergy, and that the rot often starts at the top. There are startling newsitems, such as clergymen suing their bishops, a diocese suing an archdiocese, nearly 4400 (4%) of US RC priests were abusers, nuns have abused another nun or children, and first one diocese and then another two or three sought protection in 2004 under the US bankruptcy system. Even in dealing under the insolvency provisions of US law, some US RC bishops were contradicting each other in Nov-Dec 2004.
   As the months go by the Australian religious and the mainstream news media show patchy interest in covering such "landmark" occurrences. The sheer volume and variety of the criminals' activities is entertaining. But by now hardened journalists have probably realised that most well-informed readers have read enough to realise that "something is rotten in the state of Denmark."
   Enough has been written to show that this websection's motto is aptly chosen. The webmaster has been as pained by this as some of the readers, and is surprised at how much other evidence of this exists in easily-obtainable news media and books. There are new books periodically, and plays and film documentaries. Most churchgoers are "in denial," and don't want to know anything about it. But they won't be able to meaningfully act to clean up their religions unless they face the truth. The donations of past centuries are being eaten up in the USA.
