Free speech means we get to hear all views
The Australian, 2 Holt St, Surry Hills, NSW 2010; by CHRIS KENNY, p 9, Thursday, February 21, 2013
CALL it synchronicity or dumb luck, but Dutch anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders's visit comes as concerns about curbs on free speech are building along with a sometimes related debate about the Muslim community's integration into the Australian mainstream.
As if to emphasise the sensitivity of both issues, vocal and diverse elements prefer not to hear Wilders, see Wilders or speak of him.
The federal government was slow to grant him a visa but Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus now says he is welcome to share his views. "But I'm equally free to condemn them," he says, "and the government does condemn (them)."
In Western Australia, Liberal Premier Colin Barnett was forthright: "I don't want him here," he said, insisting no government buildings could be used to promote Wilders's message. The Perth event was cancelled for lack of a willing venue – a persistent problem for this divisive figure.
He is denounced as a racist by some. Islamophobe is the more apt descriptor, and one he invites with strident statements such as: "I don't hate Muslims, I hate their book and their ideology."
He openly campaigns against Islam, calling for the Koran to be banned – an intolerant attitude from one reliant on free speech to preach his message.
His prescription becomes even more controversial, and personal, when he demands an end to Muslim immigration in The Netherlands, as Islamification of the population has created social tensions and sparked violence, perpetrated by and against Muslims. [* * * : The article continues for another 100 column/centimetres, plus four photographs, one of which shows a man in September at a Sydney protest against a video, holding a hand-lettered sign, "Behead those who insult Islam".]

[RECAPITULATION: "Behead those who insult Islam". ENDS.]
[COMMENT: That hardly looks like "integration into the Australian mainstream."  Unless, of course, the Australian mainstream is being moved towards being like the unjust societies of Kazahkstan, Uzbekistan, Kirghizia, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, etc. COMMENT ENDS.]

Censorship double standard

??? The West Australian, ( letters § wanews com au ), OR a suburban newspaper, Letter to The Editor, Feb or Mar 2013
There appears to be a perplexing difference between the Australian States in regard to censorship.
This month in Victoria the biggest Islamic "Peace" Conference ever organised in the southern hemisphere will be staged at Melbourne showgrounds.  The reason for the meeting is known in Islam as a Dawah and is unashamedly designed to attract converts to Islam.
The speakers include Wazeem Razvi, the founder of the conference, who has stated his desire to see sharia law established in Australia, Sheikh Assim Al-Hakeem, who wants to see legislation enacted mandating the death sentence for homosexuals, Sheikh Abdul-Rahman Al-Sudais, who is the imam of Mecca's Grand Mosque, a supporter and admirer of Osama bin Laden and who has described Jews as the rats of the world that should be exterminated, and Abu Hamza who condones a beating for women who refuse sex on demand to their husbands.
And yet in WA, when visiting Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders was invited here to discuss the impact of high Muslim immigration into Holland, Premier Colin Barnett set the lead for opposition to this by stating that all government venues would be blocked to this speaker.
Obviously local businesses who wished not to lose favour with this Government did likewise.
There could be many older migrants from Europe such as me who wonder:  could it just be possible that one day in the future in Australia we may again see the burning of books that did not find favour with those in power?

[COMMENT: The case is self-evident.  ENDS.]

IN THEIR introduction Otto and Mason note that, 'since the late 1990s Islam has moved up the political agenda to become one of the most controversial issues in Dutch society. Large-scale immigration and financial instability combine to change the Netherlands from a culture of tolerance and stability to one of mutual suspicion, dissatisfaction and unrest.' How should officials respond? To what extent is Islam a threat to Dutch society?  Delicate Debates is premised on the supposition that scholars and policy makers need to talk to one another.
The nine contributors to this volume address issues that are likely to arise in any discussion of Islam. In identifying the contribution of the academic sector to policy decision, the editors find two views to be prevalent.
One view maintains that the essence of Islamic civilization, culture, and law is to be found in its religious sources. The other view looks to the variety of countries and social contexts in which Islamic norms are actually formulated and interpreted in practice.
The difference between the two approaches may be illustrated as follows. From a theological perspective, stoning to death for adultery and other forms of brutal punishment are sanctioned, but empirically one finds that most Muslim countries do not incorporate those theologically justified norms into their national law. There are world-wide exceptions, it is acknowledged, given that local communities, in their efforts to combat social ills such as prostitution, drinking, and drug addiction, sometimes justify stoning or amputation by reference to sharia.
Otto, Jan Michiel and Hannah Mason, eds. Delicate Debates on Islam: Policy Makers and Academics Speaking with Each Other. Amsterdam: Leiden University Press 2012. Distributed by the University of Chicago Press. Pp. 100
Job Cohen, one of the prominent contributors to this volume, was for nine years mayor of Amsterdam. In the light of that experience he asks whether Islam is essentially a violent religion, and he wonders whether the followers of what he calls 'the extreme variants of Islam' are increasing and is furthermore concerned that the Netherlands as a whole may be becoming Islamic.
Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, former Secretary General of NATO, asks scholars whether they can shed light on what in the Muslim world can be ascribed to culture and what to religion.
Nicholaos van Dam holds that it is undeniable that certain interpretations of Islam lead to violence.
Leon Buskins maintains, contrary to the claims of some, that the essence of Islam cannot be determined empirically. In reality Muslims differ in their interpretations of Islam. Consequently, Buskins suggests that any Islam-related policy needs to consider that heterogeneity and deal specifically with Muslim communities within a given geographical or cultural context.
John Esposito, Professor of Islamic Studies at Georgetown University and author of Who Speaks for Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think, insists that a distinction be made between Islam and extremism.
Mainstream Muslims worldwide, he is convinced, need to address the threat to Islam from its own religious extremists. Esposito discounts both textual and historical scholarship as a key to an understanding Islam. To know what Islam is we need to know what mainstream Muslims think.
Esposito confronts what he calls, 'the disinformation and lies created by neocons, anti-immigrant ideologies, and Islamophobic experts who foster and play on fear and prejudice.' In determining our foreign policy, he writes, 'We need to reach out and work more with the mainstream majority in the Muslim world, in partnership, to marginalize terrorists'
Conscious that policy decisions are often made in the light of media reporting, Esposito believes that academics have an obligation to become public intellectuals. 'Those who write in areas that are relevant and important for policy decision need to seek venues that make our ideas and advice accessible.'
By his own account Esposito is engaged in the battle for public influence with 'the far-right neocons and the hardline Christian-Zionist right.' As Founding Director of the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal for Muslim-Christian Understanding, he has a platform from which to speak..
It should be noted that the Saudi Prince himself contributed twenty million dollars to Georgetown University to found the centre and a like amount to Harvard University.
With Esposito, it is currently fashionable among the political insouciant to distinguish between 'Westernized moderate Muslims' and 'extreme Muslims.' The distinction may have some merits, but it blurs a fundamental truth.
All Muslims subscribe to the principles enunciated in the Koran, principles that – however interpreted – unite them as brothers in a common cause and unify them as a spiritual force aimed at world domination, a spiritual force intrinsically hostile to the West and especially to Christianity.
One cannot ignore the de facto teaching of Islamic spokesmen throughout the world. Islam cannot be separated from the Koran, the Hadith, and its long history from Muhammad at Medina to the present. Here scholarship is of invaluable service. Perhaps the best understanding of historical Islam remains Ignaz Goldziher's Introduction to Islamic Theology and Law, (Princeton University Press, 1981).

(Reprint of words by Ali Akbar Salehi, foreign minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Washington Post, August 9, 2012)
IRAN SEEKS a solution that is in the interest of everyone. Syrian society is a beautiful mosaic of ethnicities, faiths and cultures, and it will be smashed to pieces should President Bashar al-Assad abruptly fall. The idea that, in that event, there would be an orderly transition of power is an illusion.
Although Annan's efforts to end the crisis have been terminated, his six-point plan for political change is alive and welt. Why should seeds of discord continue to be planted when the situation can be resolved rationally, through wisdom and providence?
Those backing violence in Syria fail to see that whatever they seek through their actions won't materialize. Abrupt political change without a roadmap for managed political transition will lead only to a precarious situation that would destabilize one of the world's most sensitive regions. Iran is part of the solution, not the problem.

Yesterday, a day after being acquitted of charges in Canada, police in Toronto arrested Mohammad Masroor for extradition to the US in the case of a Muslim cleric who is also accused of molesting in Michigan and Florida.
We are grateful to Toronto police for arresting this Imam before he could flee to a country where he could avoid extradition to the US. It is important that he face trial for the alleged abuse that allegedly occurred in Michigan and Florida. We hope that this arrest will bring hope to the children who have been victimized by him.
Given the history of allegations against Masroor and the multitude of countries to which he has ties, we believe that there are likely other victims out there suffering in silence. We urge anyone who may have seen or suspected crimes by Masroor or any other Imam will come forward and make a report to police.

Afghan women in Kabul prison over ‘moral’ crimes

   Associated Press <>, <97.html>, Tuesday, April 9, 2013
[SUMMARY and BRIEF COMMENT by Jihad Watch <>, <director § jihadwatch org>:   Afghan women in Kabul prison over "moral" crimes - Victims of rape, beatings, forced marriage, and more - and they end up in prison, because in Afghanistan, in accord with Islamic law, women are little more than commodities.  But remember: it is "hate" to oppose this savagery.]

"Afghan women in Kabul prison over 'moral' crimes," by Kathy Gannon for the Associated Press, April 9, 2013 (thanks to all who sent this in):
KABUL (AP) – Lost and alone in a strange city Mariam called the only person she knew, her husband's cousin. She worried he wouldn't help her because she had left her home in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province, fleeing to the capital Kabul to escape his relentless and increasingly vicious beatings. But he promised to help. Too busy to come himself he sent a friend who took her to "some house", held a gun to her head and raped her.
Finished with her he settled in front of a TV set, the gun on a table by his side. Choosing her moment, Mariam picked up the gun shot her assailant in the head and turned the gun on herself.
"Three days later I woke up in the hospital," she said, slowly, shyly removing a scarf from her head to reveal a partially shaved head and a long jagged scar that ran almost the length of her head where the bullet grazed her scalp.
From the hospital Mariam was sent to a police station and from there to Badam Bagh, Afghanistan's central women's prison where she told her story to The Associated Press. For the past three months Mariam has been waiting to find out why she is in jail, the charges and when she can leave.
"I haven't gone to court. I am just waiting."
Hugging a ratty brown sweater to protect her from the damp cold of the prison, Mariam is one of 202 women living in the six- year- old jail. The majority of the women packed are serving sentences of up to seven years for leaving their husbands, refusing to accept a marriage arranged by their parents, or choosing to leave their parent's home with a man of their choice - all so-called "moral" crimes, says the prison's director general Zaref Jan Naebi.
Some of the women were jailed while pregnant, others with their small children. Naebi says there are 62 children living with their imprisoned mothers, sharing the same grey steel bunk-beds, napping in the afternoon hidden behind a sheet draped from an upper bunk, oblivious to the chatter and the crackling noises from the small fussy television sets shoved off to one side of the rooms.
The Taliban were thrown out 12 years ago ending five years of rule and regressive laws that enforced a tribal tradition and culture more than religious compulsions denying girls schools, ordering women to stay indoors unless accompanied by a male, and in some of the more severe cases even blackening the first story [storey] windows so prying eyes could not see women within. Women were forced to wear the all-encompassing burqa or suffer a public beating.
In the first years after the Taliban's December 2001 removal strides seemed to be made for women, schools opened, women came out of their house, many still in the burqas but appearing on television and getting elected to Parliament.
But women's activists in Kabul say within a few years of the Taliban's ouster the ball was dropped, interest waned and even President Hamid Karzai began making statements that harkened back to the Taliban rule saying women really should be accompanied by a man while outside their home. A new law was enacted called the Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW), but its implementation is erratic and rare, says the United Nations Assistance Mission on Afghanistan, whose human rights arm monitors such things.
An UNAMA report issued in December last year says it is difficult to even get information about violence against women from the authorities partially because they don't want to look bad if it showed that little was being done and little, if any, official documentation on violence against women exists.
While it might not be against the law to run away or escape a forced marriage, the courts routinely convict women fleeing abusive homes with "the intent to commit zina (or adultery)" which are most often simply referred to as "moral crimes," says the report.
"Perceptions toward women are still the same in most places, tribal laws are the only laws followed and in most places nothing has changed in the basics of women's lives. There are policies and papers and even laws but nothing has changed," said Zubaida Akbar whose volunteer Haider organization fights for women's rights and sends lawyers and aid workers to the women's prison to defend the inmates in court.
In the overwhelmingly male dominated legal system, Akbar said even when an inmate gets in front of the judge, "he says 'it is her husband, she should go back and make it work. It is her fault and not her place to leave him - not in our society.' " #

"US teargas arrives in Egypt for Muslim Brotherhood use," from The Commentator, April 9 (thanks to Twostellas):
A shipment of teargas canisters from the United States arrived at the Egyptian Abadeya Port in Suez on Sunday, according to official documents obtained by the Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper.
Five containers carrying around 140,000 teargas canisters were apparently shipped to the Egyptian Interior Ministry by the Aramex International courier service.
The Egypt Independent reports that the shipping documents state that only the Egyptian government may use the canisters, and that they are forbidden to re-export the shipment or sell it to third parties.
The documents state that the shipment set sail from the port of Wilmington in Pennsylvania on 14 March on board the SS Jamestown. A letter of credit was forwarded without specifying the name of the bank. The Egyptian government paid the freight fees.
In February this year, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported that the Interior Ministry agreed to import teargas canisters for $2.46 million, to be shipped by an Egyptian military cargo plane.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Hani Abdel Latif said that the ministry imported the grenades in order to protect state facilities.
Egyptian authorities have recently used teargas against various demonstrations, including a recent crackdown on protests on Saturday, when demonstrators threw fireworks and reportedly attempted to gain access to a court and the prosecutor-general's office in central Cairo.

[Pope Tawadros to Morsi: "This flagrant assault on a national symbol, the Egyptian church, has never been subjected to this in 2,000 years" [sic!]
[What must Western Christian leaders think when they see this? Maybe something like "How dare Pope Tawadros talk about this? Doesn't he realize that he is harming Muslim/Christian dialogue?"]
"Egypt pope blasts Morsi over cathedral clashes," from AFP (Agence France-Presse), April 9 (thanks to Mona):
CAIRO: Egypt's Pope Tawadros II on Tuesday accused President Mohamed Morsi of "negligence" in his response to deadly clashes outside Cairo's Coptic cathedral, the worst sectarian crisis since he took power in June.
Morsi had telephoned Tawadros after Sunday's violence which saw crowds pelt mourners with stones after they emerged from a funeral service for slain Coptic Christians.
Shocking television images showed police fire tear gas at St. Mark's cathedral – symbol of the Coptic community which has long complained of discrimination and has been the target of frequent sectarian attacks.
Morsi "promised to do everything to protect the cathedral but in reality we don't see this," Tawadros told the private ONTV channel in a call-in.
When asked why, Tawadros said he believed "it comes under the category of negligence and poor assessment of events." Two people died in Sunday's clashes which erupted after the funeral service of four Christians killed in earlier violence in a town north of Cairo. One Muslim was also killed in those confrontations.
Tawadros said the church had never before in its history witnessed this level of attack.
"This flagrant assault on a national symbol, the Egyptian church, has never been subjected to this in 2,000 years," Tawadros said. [sic !]
He called on authorities to take a strong position against such kinds of attacks.
"There has to be a clear stance from the state because matters now have crossed the limits of freedom of expression and have reached a level of chaos,"he said.
"Some officials have expressed kind feelings, these feelings are not enough at all," he continued.
Following the attack, Morsi said: "I consider any attack on the cathedral an attack against myself," and proposed to revive the defunct Justice and Equality Committee, which was established to look at promoting citizenship and equality.
"The committees and the groups, we have had enough of them. We want action and not just words," Tawadros said. "Committees are formed every day but there is no work taking place on the ground."

[Muslim persecution of Christians escalating in Egypt.  Don't talk about the plight of Egyptian Christians too loudly.  To do so might imperil the wonderful dialogue we're having with Islamic supremacists stateside.]
"For Egypt's Christians, 1,374 Tough Years and Counting," by Brian O'Neel for the National Catholic Register, <http://www.>, April 9, 2013:
With the Feb. 11, 2011, overthrow of the government President Hosni Mubarak had led for 29 years, many Christians hoped better days had come.
However, as Robert Spencer, director of, told the Register, "The Mubarak government was hardly friendly to the Christians, but it was nothing like it is now. The Muslim Brotherhood{-led} government even seems to be instigating some of the violence."
Ashraf Ramelah, director of Voice of the Copts, concurs. Mubarak, he contends, was "anti-Christian, but he wasn't open about that."
The Muslim Brotherhood isn't so circumspect. Thus, despite the promises the fundamentalist Islamic movement made upon assuming power that it would have Christians in prominent positions and would set aside seats for minorities and women, none of that has happened.
Instead, the persecution has become more and more pronounced.
On Jan. 1, 2011, before Mubarak's downfall, Islamists assaulted an Orthodox Coptic church in Alexandria, leaving 21 dead.
Later that month, in southern Egypt, where both Christians and the most radical Muslims are concentrated, extremists smashed into two Christian homes, wounding four and murdering 11.
Then, in October 2011, state security forces repressed Christian demonstrations after Muslims attacked a Christian church in Upper Egypt while police stood by and watched.
Since the switch in governments in 2011, the provincial capital of Minya alone has seen a spate of more than 150 kidnappings directed solely at Christians. Several of those kidnapped are girls who were forced into marriage and thereafter considered Muslim. No matter what they believe in their hearts, they can never again be Christians, at least officially.
Sometimes people are kidnapped at their church's door. The kidnappers commonly demand money, but they also want to scare Christians away from church.
   Other Forms of Oppression
Persecution isn't limited to such violence, but is embedded in the pavement of each Christian's daily walk.
For instance, if a church wants to affect repairs or build, it must go through a costly, complicated federal permit process. Even if successful in this, local administrators can veto the federal permission.
Back in February, the government set the first date for elections for April 27 and the second for May 5. The former date is the Saturday before the Copts celebrate Palm Sunday this year. The latter is the date they will observe Easter.
"Our political leaders chose the dates because they never take the calendar of Christian festivities into consideration," a Coptic Catholic bishop told the Vatican-affiliated Fides news service, "because no one around them is in a position to advise when a date is inopportune."
The common thread through all these forms of discrimination, however, is that the majority wants to maintain Muslim dominance as a part of what it means to identify as an Egyptian.
Much of this is fueled by private Islamic religious TV stations that feed their viewers a 24/7 diet of anti-Christian and anti-Jewish vitriol. Considering that 70% of Egyptians say they get much of their news from such stations, the prejudice is not hard to understand.
It leads men such as Abdullah Badr – a popular, respected Egyptian Muslim scholar – to say he despises Christians so much that he refuses to eat food prepared by them and would not drink from a cup a Christian had merely touched.
Given all of this, Egyptian Christians can't comprehend the friendly U.S. policy toward their nation. One Catholic-Copt bishop says, "The U.S. does not fully understand what is happening in Egypt."
Indeed, the United States provides billions in foreign aid each year to Egypt, but how those funds are used isn't always clear. Furthermore, the U.S. – the same nation that liberated those living behind the Iron Curtain – has shrugged its shoulders at the plight of those suffering in ways no less pathetic than the Israelites under Pharaoh, according to Egyptian Christian critics.
What might be done to help? Spencer says Americans need to make Egypt's continued reception of "financial aid contingent upon the way they are treating their minorities."
For his part, Ramelah hopes Catholic churches will "open their doors to those who can explain this situation to their congregations. People need to know the truth."

TORONTO - When a single dad signed his nine-year-old daughter up for female-only swim lessons, he didn't realize he – as a man – was going to be banned from watching her practice.
Chris (who didn't want his last name published) was shocked when he had the blinds to the viewing area of the Dennis R. Timbrell Recreation Centre pool in Flemingdon Park shut on him and then was told by staffers it was for "religious reasons."
"I spoke to a staff member and she told me that it's because of Muslim women, that we're not allowed to look at them or whatever," Chris, 38, told the Toronto Sun Friday. "I don't think religion has a role to play in a public pool."
Chris said he enrolled his daughter online through the city's website and registered her for the Ultra Swim 1: Female class – a nine-week course offered for free at the community centre.
Nowhere on the form did it mention that males could not watch the lessons.
So, when he showed up with his child at the pool on March 28 and again on Thursday night, he was confused when told he wasn't allowed to watch.
"She doesn't have a lot of friends and I wanted her to swim with girls," Chris explained. "I don't know what parent wouldn't want to watch their child participate. There were other fathers there who weren't too happy."
Local Councillor John Parker hadn't heard of the particular case until the Sun contacted him Friday, but said the dad's point is a "legitimate one" and raises a "fair issue."
"If we have a young child and there is a desire for the parent to provide supervision I would hope that we would not be so inflexible," he said.
The Ward 26-Don Valley West councillor said there are only so many hours available in the pool.
"So we have to decide and we have to determine just what are the options that are available to us and how many hours are there in the day to allow the different options that communities want," Parker said. "So far the pressure has been to provide hours for women only, this gives rise to the legitimate question: ought we to find time for mixed groups precisely to accommodate the concern that this parent has raised."
Female-only swim programs began 20 years ago on the basis of "accommodating cultural and religious practices and requirements," confirmed city aquatics manager Anne Jackson.
"Without a female-only program, there would be women that wouldn't be able to participate in swimming," Jackson said. "This is the way it needs to be in order to accommodate the programs. We're not opening the door to one cultural group only – this is all females we're accommodating."
Late last month, Dennis R. Timbrell began a male-only swim course where only men could watch from the sidelines – no moms. The program bred from the same religious/cultural reasons, Jackson said.
If any parents wish to watch their child who is enrolled in a female or male-only swim class, they would have to move them to a mixed boys/girls class that runs three days a week.
The weekly gender-specific swim classes are open to anyone from two to 18, but Jackson said the city won't consider separating existing classes into younger age groups (that would allow parents of the opposite sex to be present) because it wouldn't "accommodate the needs of the majority of people who want to participate in a girls-only program."

[2nd COMMENT: Wasn't the destruction of a famous pilgrim church or cathedral somewhere in that part of the world one of the triggers for one of the Crusades, hundreds of years ago?

Boston: An eight-year-old boy is one of three people killed and eight children are among the 140 injured from yesterday's horrific bomb attacks near the finish of the Boston Marathon.
As the FBI searched a home in suburban Boston, authorities named the dead boy as Martin Richard, who was with his mother and sister watching his father run.
The other two were both seriously hurt as they waited to celebrate the end of the race.
Hospitals said of the 140 injured, 17 were critical and many lost limbs.
At least 10 amputations were reported.
Doctors said ball bearings and shrapnel had been removed from patients.
The explosions were 12 seconds apart and knocked spectators and runners off their feet, shattering windows and sending dense plumes of smoke over the street and through fluttering national flags lining the route.
Blood stained the pavement and huge shards were missing from windows as high up as three storeys.
Two suspicious packages found nearby were detonated but found not to be bombs.
Tim Davey, of Richmond, Virginia, was with his wife Lisa and children near a medical tent set up to care for fatigued runners when the injured began arriving.
"They just started bringing people in with no limbs," he said.

"Most everybody was conscious," Lisa Davey said. "They were very dazed."
No one has claimed credit for the carnage in the city known as the Cradle of Liberty on its celebrated Patriots Day.
In a national television address from the White House, President Barack Obama said: "We still do not know who did this and people should not jump to conclusions before we have all of the facts.
"But make no mistake. We will get to the bottom of this and we will find out who did this. We'll find out why they did this.
"Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice."
Special agent Rick DesLauriers, who heads the FBI Boston bureau, said: "It is a criminal investigation, a potential terrorist investigation."
Law enforcement officers later searched an apartment in the Boston suburb of Revere.
Massachusetts State Police confirmed a search warrant related to the investigation into the bombs was served but gave no further details.
Investigators were seen leaving the house carrying brown paper bags, plastic rubbish bags and a duffel bag.
Authorities in New York and Washington tightened security in the wake of the blasts.
In Britain, police said the London Marathon would go ahead on Sunday with increased security.
They also stepped up measures for tonight's funeral of former prime minister Lady Margaret Thatcher.
Bill Iffrig, 78, had been running for four hours in his third Boston Marathon when the first explosion knocked him over.  "The force from it just turned my whole body to jelly and I went down," the retired carpenter said.
Fearing for his life, he thought: "This is probably it for me." But he wasn't hurt.
He had a scrape on one knee and was less that 5m from the finish.
"Somebody came by with a wheelchair but I said: 'I'm fine.' I wanted to finish," Mr Iffrig said.
"First thing when I got up, I said: 'There's the line up there, I can get that far'." - Associated Press

"We have no connection to this bombing but we will continue to target them wherever possible."

Re What gives people the right? (Examiner, April 3) halal certification is just another way of islamists pushing sharia law on to Australians.
It earns islamic organisations tens of billions worldwide from Western countries like Australia.
Some Australian food producers even pay for halal certification when their food product is naturally halal and thus does not need to be certified such as chocolate.
Cadbury halal certify many of their products including Easter eggs even though Easter is a Christian celebration and nothing to do with islam.
It is not law for food producers to label their products when they are halal certified, so many Australian consumers don't even know they are buying halal.
But when you do buy a halal certified product you are funding islam and sharia law.
   Fortunately there is a website called halal choices which lists halal and non-halal food products so that you do have a choice of what you buy. #;

West Bank convent loses appeal over Israeli separation barrier route

Catholic group criticises ruling after seven-year legal battle over barrier that will separate Cremisan nuns from most of their land
The Guardian (Britain), <http://www.world/2013/apr/26/west-bank-convent-israeli-barrier?INTCMP=SRCH>, Harriet Sherwood, , 12.02, BS Friday 26 April 2013
[Picture] Palestinian protesters fix flags on a fence opposite Israel's separation barrier in Beit Jala, in 2010.  The barrier is to be extended past a convent.    Photograph: Hazem Bader/AFP/Getty Images
Israel is expected to press ahead with construction of the vast West Bank barrier around a convent near the Christian town of Beit Jala, following a ruling from a special appeals committee.
The route of the barrier will separate a small community of elderly nuns at the Cremisan convent from 75% of their land and from a nearby monastery with which it has close ties. The playground of a nursery and a school run by the Cremisan sisters will be bordered on three sides by the wall.
More than 50 Palestinian families will lose free access to their agricultural land, causing economic hardship to the dwindling Christian community.
The campaign against the route of the barrier at Cremisan was taken up by the UK foreign secretary, William Hague, and the archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols. In a letter disclosed by the Guardian last year, Hague told Nichols that he shared his "concerns about the problem of land confiscation by the Israeli authorities affecting the people of Beit Jala and similar Palestinian communities in the occupied territories".
Following a seven-year legal campaign, Israel's special appeals committee this week ruled in favour of the route, which leaves the convent on the Palestinian side of the barrier and the monastery and land belonging to the convent and local families on the Israeli side.
According to the Society of St Yves, a Catholic human rights organisation that represented the nuns, the committee decided that the proposed route was "a reasonable solution that balances Israel's security needs on one hand and freedom of religion and the right to education on the other".
However, the society said the ruling was "highly problematic and unjust". It failed to properly address "the violation of freedom of religion, the right to education as well as the economical damage caused for a unique Christian minority in Beit Jala by the construction of the wall," it said. It is considering an appeal to Israel's supreme court.
The UK government provided indirect funding for the legal case. It says Israel is entitled to build a barrier but it should lie on the internationally recognised 1967 Green Line, not on confiscated Palestinian land. About 85% of the barrier is inside the West Bank. The route is harming the prospects of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to Britain.
In his Christmas Eve homily in 2011, Nichols offered prayers in support of the community's "legal battle to protect their land and homes from further expropriation by Israel".
Last year Israel's defence ministry told the Guardian: "The route of the security fence in the Beit Jala region is based purely on security considerations. This portion is there solely to keep terror out of Jerusalem." #

[COMMENT:  Tell me another!  Extremist scripture-following Judaism is just as determined to be MONOCULTURAL as those who follow the scriptures and traditions of Islam.  Pious Judaists (Jews) have ancient writings to back their belief, and so do pious Muslims, that they OWN ALL of Palestine – although after it was taken from the Muslim Turkish empire during the Great War of 1914-18 it was owned really by a mixture of Muslims (successors to invaders of the 600s), and small percentages of Judaists, Christians of a bewildering variety of sects, even a tiny community of Samaritans, and followers of other religions.
The invasion by Zionists after World War II had no legal or moral justification whatsover, BUT it was backed and aided by the two superpowers, the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.  Arms for the Zionist Jewish invaders came from the Skoda arms works in Communist-controlled Czechoslovakia, and money came from U.S. and other Jewish communities around the world.  The United States annually pours millions of dollars into the Jewish Zionist state of Israel.
There had been three Jewish terrorist groups harming people during the British mandate between World War I and II, two notable crimes being the blowing up of part of the King David Hotel, and the cruel murders of two British servicemen.  But, on the other hand, the Muslim Grand Mufti of Jerusalem went to Nazi Germany and was put on radio to pour out hate and racism against the Judaists.
After the Jews set up the illicit state of Israel, Muslim terrorist groups started their own horrible crimes, including suicide bombing of Judaists.  Other Mohammedan terrorist groups now operate throughout the world.  ENDS.]

‘A campaign of intimidation by Islamists left most Christians in this southern Egyptian province too afraid to participate in last year's referendum on an Islamist-drafted constitution.  Around a week before the vote, some 50,000 Islamists marched through the provincial capital, Assiut, chanting that Egypt will be “Islamic, Islamic, despite the Christians”.’  1

Annals Australasia (R.C. culture journal, Sydney), ( editorannals § gmail com ), By Paul Stenhouse, MSC PhD, pp 22-25, April-May 2013
AS WE GO to press there is still no news of the fate of the two [Christian] Orthodox bishops kidnapped by unidentified gunmen on the outskirts of Aleppo [northern Syria].  Their driver, a deacon, was killed.  Itar-Tass quoted Orthodox Metropolitan Hilarion as saying that 'in those places where the authorities are replaced by the rebel groups, Christianity is being exterminated to the last man.'
He recalled that 'Syria has taken more than two million Iraqi refugees, thousands of whom are Christians.' The Metropolitan added, 'thousands of militant extremists under the guise of opposition forces unleashed a civil war in this country. Extremist groups armed and trained by means of foreign powers are deliberately killing Christians.'  2
And not only Christians. The chaos that has engulfed Syria since armed foreign Islamist Jihadists infiltrated Syrian demonstrators calling for Constitutional reform in early 2011, has put in jeopardy the fate of millions of Christian, Jewish, Druse, Alawite and other non-Sunni and non-Arab minorities living in a country that was once, for all its dominance by the Baath party and the Assad family, the most tolerant and stable of all Muslim States in the region.
Last year across much of the Muslim world Christians endured weeks of violent backlash as mobs took to the streets after suspected Libyan terrorists - in the aftermath of the showing of a video criticising Muhammad - attacked the US Consulate in Benghazi causing the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. Six Christian men playing cards, in the Nigerian city of Bauchi, were shot dead seemingly by the Islamist group Boko Haram. Christian websites were hacked in the Persian Gulf, and across the Muslim world churches were burned down and Christian homes attacked.  3
The Daily Times of Islamabad carried a story warning that textbooks in Pakistan's schools are 'rife with factual errors, bias and hate' towards minorities in the Sunni Muslim majority country. According to the report this situation is helping fuel the increasing levels of intolerance and extremism being witnessed by Pakistani society today.  4
On March 12 last year, according to several Arabic news sources, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, called for the destruction of all the churches in the region.  5

Late last year reports emerged of continuing government intimidation and violence against displaced Shia refugees in East Java Province of Indonesia. Local authorities have cut off food and water to around 190 displaced Shia villagers from Madura Island - urging them to convert to Sunni Islam if they want to return to their homes.  6 They were driven from their homes in August when around 500 Sunni Muslims attacked them, killing two and injuring six and burning at least 39 homes. In late December 2011, 500 Shia were forced to flee their homes in Nangkemang.  7
Since May 2012 at least 20 house churches or prayer chapels have been closed down by Singkil regency officials in Acheh. Among these, ten belonged to the Pakpak Dairi Christian Protestant Church and four were Catholic. The leaders of the United Alliance of North Sumatra say that the attacks are of "growing concern," given that there is no "protection or recognition" for all religious groups, above all minorities. The situation in Singkil in particular is getting worse, with gross violations of religious freedom which is "recognized officially by our Constitution." Christian leaders also point the finger at the central government in Jakarta, which does not intervene in cases where individual local governments violate the rights and freedoms of citizens, particularly non-Muslims.  8
Intolerance and extremism are not peculiar to Nigeria, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia or Indonesia. Of the 49 countries with a Muslim majority (including Kosovo) analysed in its recent Worldwide Religious Freedom Report 2012, published by Aid to the Church in Need, 17 have Islam as the State religion with consequences that range from the exclusion of all non-Muslim religious practice - as in Saudi Arabia - to cases in which other faiths are strictly controlled in their activities, or intimidated into converting to, usually, Sunni Islam.
In the light of the above, it is worrying to note the judgement expressed in October 2008 by the then Director General of the Australian Office of National Assessments - a euphemism for a security organization accountable to the Australian Prime Minister and Cabinet - that terrorism was 'a good news story that is getting better, with the violent Islamist threat receding'.  9

Coming closer to our own region, during 1997 and 1998 more than 500 Catholic and Protestant churches were burnt down throughout Indonesia. The figure is conservative, as, according to some estimates, more than 350 churches were burned down in the first months of 1998 alone. The Christians were weaponless and politically powerless They were, like the Shia, a minority in a Sunni Muslim country. They made no effective response.
This church-burning had been mainly restricted to Java and Sumatra including Aceh. Since 1968 more than 1,000 Indonesian churches had been burned down or demolished. The problem had not yet touched the Moluccas - mainly because Christians comprised 50% of the population and relations between Muslims and their Christian neighbours were good.
By January 1999 all this had changed. When Christians in Kupang - the capital of West Timor - finally retaliated by burning down two mosques this act was regarded by Muslims as an affront by the 'Christian dogs,' - the 'infidels' - and in January 1999 several people were killed in Dobu, in the Aru Islands.
Not long afterwards, on January 19, 1999, the killing started in Ambon, capital of the Moluccas.
A Christian driver of a minibus refused to give into extortion when a young Muslim demanded money; a fight started and people took sides and it quickly spread to the whole of the island. Muslims came from Hitulama and butchered many people - about twenty in the village of Benteng Kareng including one or more pregnant women - because they had heard that the mosque in Ambon was surrounded. The Christians then heard that the Silo Protestant Church had been burnt and destroyed. Tensions mounted.
The Catholics in Ambon were mainly immigrants from nearby islands and from other parts of Indonesia. The Ambonese were Protestants from Dutch colonial times, and Muslims. So the Catholics tended to stay out of the conflict - not regarding it as 'their fight'. This all changed when the Laskar Jihad arrived in May 2000. The Mujahidun in their distinctive white robes and caps, and brandishing machetes and guns, did not distinguish between Catholics and Protestants.
The Catholics and the Chinese subsequently suffered terrible material losses, but fewer of them were killed than the Protestant Ambonese because they fled back to their islands since they had no weapons with which to defend themselves, and they had fewer family estates to defend than their Protestant neighbours.
These latter on the other hand had weapons, and because they were locals, had nowhere to go.  Ambon was their home, and they had been there longer than many of the Muslims who had taken part in early large-scale migration from Bugis, Buton and Makassar, or had arrived only after 1949 in this part of the Moluccas under government sponsored transmigration from Java. This partly explains the reaction of the Protestants to the violence of the Laskar Jihad and the local Muslims.
The Muslims looted and burnt the shops and homes of the Catholics and Protestants. Local Muslims also suffered damage to their homes and shops, but the military were ordered not to fire against the Muslims. Sometimes they did so. Mujahidun snipers controlled certain areas, and particularly bridges that Christians had to use, but the police never caught them.
Agence France Press {AFP} reported that east of the capital, Ambon, Muslims massacred 93 Christians on Kasui, a small island in Indonesia's Moluccas chain, for refusing to convert to Islam.
Annals wasn't able to confirm this number. But reliable sources confirmed that all attacks by the Mujahidun on this occasion {November 23-26, 2000} took place at about 6.00 a.m. and that an estimated 3,000 Muslim fighters were involved.
The village of Utta was attacked on November 23, resulting in the burning of a church and 4 houses. Karlomin was attacked on November 24, resulting in several residents being killed, others wounded, and a number of houses burned. On November 25, it was the turn of Wunin to be attacked. The Catholic church, a school and 100 houses were burned.

Christians refugees in their own countries

P ATRIARCH SAKO, elected earlier this year to lead the Chaldean Catholic Church, recently noted that in the past, "There were three hundred churches in Iraq, and now there are only fifty-seven left. Even those that remain are targets."
The savage massacre inside Baghdad's Our Lady of Salvation Church in October 2010, in which scores of worshippers were killed and the rest of the congregation injured, was seen as a turning point - the moment when many remaining Christians decided they had no future in their own nation.
Iraq's Christians, whose roots in their country predate Islam by centuries and go back nearly two thousand years, now face complete eradication as a religious minority.  Syria's Christians, numbering as many as two million, also find themselves unwelcome as Islamists dominate the rebellion and take control. Many thousands have already fled to Lebanon, Turkey and points further west.
Meanwhile, Egypt's eight to ten million Coptic Orthodox, by far the largest surviving Church in the Middle East and heir to an extraordinary cultural and religious history, face a growing wave of violence against their churches and villages, and the frequent kidnapping, rape, and forced conversion of Coptic women and young girls. This pattern of hatred is not new. Anti-Christian violence in Egypt, often ignored by news media in the West, has been happening for decades. Now it's worse. As a result, Copts too have begun to exit, spurred by the election of a Muslim Brotherhood president and the adoption of an Islamist constitution.
Iraq, Syria, and Egypt: These three countries, along with Lebanon, are home to the only sizeable Christian minorities left in the Middle East. Over the past century, the Middle East's Christian population has dropped from as high as 30 per cent to barely 3 per cent, with religious persecution and intimidation largely to blame. If these remaining communities are destroyed, an indigenous Christian presence will disappear from the region where Jesus Christ first established his Church two thousand years ago.
The annihilation of this Christian culture, the cradle of much of the West's moral heritage, will have profound implications, not only for Catholics and other Christians, but for a world in urgent need of the ability to peacefully coexist.
   – 'Pope Francis and the Christians of the Middle East' by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, First Things, March 22, 2013.

The village of Tanasoa became target of an attack on November 26: several Christians were killed, a church, a school and a number of houses were burned. 270 people from these villages managed to escape to the neighbouring island of Teor. More than 700 Catholics and Protestants subsequently agreed to convert to Islam in fear of their lives.
The victims were among an estimated 3,000 refugees who fled into the jungle when Islamic mujahidun attacked four {other} villages on November 28, according to AFP.
Associated Press {AP} reported similar attacks earlier in the week {referred to above} that destroyed two Christian churches and left 54 villagers dead. The soldiers reportedly pursued the villagers and forced captives to choose between Islam and death.
Some Muslims sought to protect their Christian friends and neighbours, a Catholic priest told AP.  'There are good Muslims who want to protect, while there are bad people who want to slaughter,' he said. The government was slow to respond to the emergency, said a witness who claimed that only one boat came to evacuate the refugees. Government officials said about 500 people were rescued and several infantry companies have been sent to the island to prevent more violence, according to AP.
In a statement to the then U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the Catholic bishop of the Moluccas - Petrus Canisius Mandagi MSC - testified, "Only recently, reports have reached us about large-scale and ruthless Islamisation of Christians, both by brutal force and leaving them no choice.
This happened in many places, including the islands of Bum and East Ceram, and most recently on the small islands of Kasui and Teor.
On Kasui of the 692 Catholics, at least 473 are still alive and they have been Islamised; nothing is known about the fate of the other 219 Catholics. On Teor, with 841 Catholics, 142 have been Islamised, about 300 succeeded in fleeing to Kei Kecil island, while the remaining 400 are still on Teor.
So of the 1,533 Catholics on the islands of Kasui and Teor, 615 have been forced to become Muslims, or have chosen to become Muslims rather than lose their lives. On these islands there are hundreds of Protestant Christians who have been converted to Islam in the same way. All these people urgently need to be freed and evacuated from Kasui and Teor."  10

Terrorism in the Philippines

A MONG THE transnational Islamic non-state players operating in the Philippines, the terrorist Jemaah Islamiyah {Jl} network poses the greatest threat to the security of the Philippines and the larger Southeast Asian region. Founded in Indonesia, the Jemaah Islamiyah has established complex transnational networks in Malaysia, Singapore, the southern Philippines, southern Thailand and even Australia.
The Jl has networks in South Asia, particularly in Afghanistan and Pakistan where its core Islamist fighters received military trainings. The Jl is also part of al Qaeda's global network of mujahideen. the Jl is extremist as it endorses political violence and has masterminded several bombings in Southeast Asia. The Jl established its presence in the Philippines in 1994 by building ties initially with the MILF and eventually with the ASG.
These ties originated in the late 1980s in Afghanistan where Moro and Indonesian Muslim fighters received joint training in a camp commanded by Ustadz Abdul Rasul Sayyaf. Around 600 Moro mujahideen were sent to Afghanistan by pretending to be either pilgrims on the way to Mecca, or in search of employment in Pakistan.
The Jl's transnational Islamic operations in the Philippines were revealed by the arrest of Fathur [Not "Father"] Rahman AI-Ghozi in 2002. AI-Ghozi was suspected to be the mastermind of the "Rizal Day" bombing in 2000. The Jl's presence in the Philippines to propagate Islamic extremism was further confirmed by Mohammed Nasir bin Abbas who confessed to have led the Jl's mantiqi three, based in Camp Hodeiba in the southern Philippines.
   – Rommel C. Banlaoi, Transnational Islam in the Philippines, The National Bureau of Asian Research, April 2009, pp. 179-180.

The silence of official Islamic leaders and spokesmen in Indonesia and Australia at the inhuman treatment of the Christians - old and young, men, women, even pregnant women, and children - in the Moluccas forcibly 'converted' to Islam, and circumcised with old Gilette blades and at the hands of so-called 'female priests' {see Annals 8, 2012 'Christina's Story' p. 45}, was revealing.
It gave the lie to claims constantly being repeated on TV and throughout the electronic media that Islam is a tolerant and peaceful religion.

Muslims and others point to Sura 2:256 in the Qur'an as proof that Islam condemns the use of violence in 'converting' to Islam any non-Muslims who fall into their power. Popularly the verse is translated by Islamic apologists, and quoted by non-Islamic media {especially on talk-back radio} and by political pundits, as 'There is no compulsion in Islam'. But that isn't what the verse says. What it says is: 'There is no coercion in religion."  11
It is warning Muslims against dallying with 'unbelief,' and 'idols' and implies that belief in religion {i.e. in Islam} is easy. This is what the reference to 'no force' or 'no coercion' seems to suggest.
It should be noted - and this is never usually stated when the verse is used as a proof of the peacefulness and tolerance of Islam - that Sura 2:256 is addressed to Muslims, not to non-Muslims. The verse is certainly not meant to reassure non-Muslims that Islam tolerates their religious beliefs, or is indifferent to them.
The contrary is the case. The following verse - Sura 2:257 - which is usually never quoted, is nevertheless the one that deserves attention. It makes the meaning of 2:256 crystal clear. It does refer to non-Muslims. It describes in unambiguous language the dire consequences of not embracing Islam: 'they are the inmates of hell, and shall dwell there'.
There is spiritual and psychological intimidation and coercion in Sura 2:257, and fanatical believers could be forgiven for concluding that if the Qur'an threatens unbelievers with hell fire if they don't become Muslims, then a fortiori Muslims may use physical force to make unbelievers embrace Islam.
But there is an even more cogent argument against the 'tolerance,' and 'lack of coercion' allegedly preached by Sura 2:256: namely, the example of Muhammad himself. His first biographer Ibn Ishaq, quoted by Ibn Hisham, records that
'Then the Apostle {Muhammad} sent Khalid bin al-Walid to the {Christian} tribe of Beni Haritha bin Ka'b in Najran and ordered him to wait three days before attacking them, after inviting them to embrace Islam If they agreed then he was to accept their submission from them; and if they refused he was to fight them. So Khalid set out and came to them and sent out riders in all directions inviting the people to Islam saying "If you accept Islam you will save your life." They embraced Islam because of the threat.  When they came to the Apostle {Muhammad} and he saw them he asked "Who are these people who look like people from India?" and they replied, "These people are the Beni al-Haritha bin Ka'b. The Apostle [Muhammad] said to them: "Had Khalid not written to me that you had accepted Islam and not resisted, I would have tossed your heads beneath your feet".'  12
Despite denial by modern-day Islamists, according to Ibn Hisham, his biographer, Muhammad approved the use of force in religion. And Islamic Law, especially the Qur'an, endorses the use of such force.
Some Muslim scholars may grudgingly admit this privately when pushed, but publicly attest the opposite, claiming against all evidence to the contrary that the Qur'an opposes the use of force in spreading Islam.
When Muhammad died, according to his biographers, the Arabs wanted to abandon Islam. Ibn Hisham reports that he was told by Abū ‘Ubaida
' and other people "who knew," that when Muhammad died ‘most of the people of Mecca intended to abandon Islam. Then Suhail bin ‘Amru got up, gave thanks to Allah, and recalled the death of the prophet of Allah {Muhammed} and said: "this will only strengthen the power of Islam. If anyone gives us trouble, we will cut off his head". At that the people changed their minds about what they were planning to do, and ‘Attab {the governor of Mecca who had fled and hidden himself out of fear} reappeared.’  13
Sura 2:256 is a trap for unwary Muslims and non-Muslims alike. It cannot be taken at face value. The final blow to its credibility comes from the fact that whatever it may originally have meant, it is now considered to have been abrogated.

The Suicide of the West

H ERE IS the novelty: Our new enemies are not political enemies in any traditional sense, belligerent in the service of certain interests of their own. Their belligerence is focused rather on the very existence of an alternative to their vision of beatitude, namely on Western democracy and its commitment to individual freedom and economic prosperity.
I return to Hussein Massawi: "We are not fighting so that you will offer us something. We are fighting to eliminate you." In fact, the situation is even grimmer than Mr. Massawi suggests. For our new enemies are not simply bent on our destruction: they are pleased to compass their own destruction as a collateral benefit.
This is one of those things that makes Islamofascism a particularly toxic form of totalitarianism. At least most Communists had some rudimentary attachment to the principle of self-preservation. In the face of such death-embracing fanaticism our only option is unremitting combat.
The large issue here is one that has bedevilled liberal societies ever since there were liberal societies: namely, that in attempting to create the maximally tolerant society, we also give scope to those who would prefer to create the maximally intolerant society.
In these pages last June, I wrote about the philosopher Leszek Kolakowski. Let me conclude by returning to what I said there. In an essay called "The Self-Poisoning of the Open Society," Kolakowski dilates on this basic antinomy of liberalism. Liberalism implies openness to other points of view, even (it would seem) those points of view whose success would destroy liberalism.
But tolerance to those points of view is a prescription for suicide. Intolerance betrays the fundamental premise of liberalism, i.e., openness. As Robert Frost once put it, a liberal is someone who refuses to take his own part in an argument.
   – Roger Kimball, 'After the suicide of the West,' from Threats to Democracy: then and now, a symposium, quote in The New Criterion, 24 {2006}.

The abrogating verse is Sura 9:73 : 'O Prophet, fight {lit. wage jihad} against the unbelievers and hypocrites, and be thou harsh with them.  Their abode is hell and evil the destination'.
When confronted with the indisputable fact of the abrogation, Islamic apologists then try another spin by claiming that the abrogation only applies to pagans, not to Christians and Jews. If this be the case, then Muslims should be appalled when their fanatical and violent co-religionists act as if it still applied to Christians and Jews.
But what about the pagans? The alleged non-abrogation for Christians and Jews is little comfort to the world's pagans who do not deserve the murderous assaults of fanatical mujahidun unleashed upon them after Friday Prayers in some local mosque.
Whatever be the real meaning and status of Sura 2:256 the incontrovertible fact is that Muslim extremists consider that Christians, Jews and Pagans can be obliged under pain of death to embrace Islam; and use Qur'anic texts to justify their actions.
The history of Islam, and the actions of Muslims in Kasui and elsewhere in Indonesia and throughout the Islamic world leave all thinking non-Muslims in no doubt that the abrogation of Sura 2:256 and the continuing validity of Sura 2:257 empowers fanatics who don't hesitate to use cruel force to make non-Muslims embrace Islam.

• A city divided.
Sweden has one of the world's most progressive immigration policies.
Why then, are tensions in one particular place on the rise?

Australian Reader's Digest, Letters to <http://contribute>, or, ( editor § readersdigest com au ), or, GPO Box 3799, Sydney, NSW, 2001; (Recommended Retail Price $5.40); pages 62-69, May 2013
M alik Rehman and Peder Ask look at each other, unsure what to say. It's a cold Sunday afternoon in the main library of Malmö, Sweden's third largest city. Ask, a tall Swedish filmmaker, has just "borrowed" Rehman, a short, dark Muslim originally from Pakistan, as part of a social programme where people offer themselves up to be explored as "living books" .
Ask starts off. "What was it like growing up Muslim?" So begins a conversation that is remarkable because so few like it are held in Sweden. It's a rare chance to talk for Rehman, a 30-year-old computer systems engineer. He moved here six years ago, after his family cast him out because he was gay.
Once in Sweden, he found his sexuality was not a problem - but his dark colouring and religion were. Landlords didn't call him back when he tried to find an apartment. A young couple that finally did rent their basement suite to him later confessed they did so despite a fear that he posed a danger to them and their children.
 Citat Zlatan, football player
"Like what? Make smelly food?" he asks.  No-one talks sbout differences here. They're too scared of asking questions. And that can lead to a lot of problems for Sweden."
Sweden has always been proud of its immigration and integration policies, since the 1970s one of the most liberal in Europe, offering newcomers free education, housing, healthcare and welfare. When Sweden's economy hit the doldrums in the late 1980s, it stopped accepting most immigrants. But the refugees kept coming. The result is that much of the immigrant community is made up of desperate people fleeing war, famine and persecution - people from the Balkan states, Afghanistan, Iraq, Turkey and Somalia. They have been accepted with no questions asked - a Good Samaritan policy that, in the throes of a Europe-wide recession, has failed.
You can see the consequences clearly in Malmö,, situated in southern Sweden. Nearly one-third of the population of 300,000 comes from somewhere else. Unemployment rates are 80% in some neighbourhoods and an increasing sense of isolation and abandonment has bred riots, gang warfare and gun crime. Although there is no official breakdown by group of who receives social welfare, in 2011, almost 117,000 people in Sweden over the age of 16 received some form of social assistance, compared to 88,000 in 2006.
Education, or lack of it, is a crucial factor. The government requires that immigrants and refugees attend special classes to become proficient in Swedish before being allowed to enter the workforce, even at the most menial level. But many newcomers are illiterate. Some have never even used a pen or pencil before.
Children learn by example from their parents: 36% of school students with a foreign background don't make it past Grade 9 with marks good enough to continue to senior high school, or gymnasium, as it is known. Moreover, in 2011, only 42% of students with a foreign background qualified for post-gymnasium education compared to 65% of Swedish-born students.
[Pictures] Top: immigrants come from many countries - in the local public school, 25 different languages are spoken.  Bottom: a typical Rosengård apartment block - immigrants often find it hard to get housing
I visit Rosengård, a hardscrabble neighbourhood near the centre of town. The moment you exit the pedestrian tunnel you step into a world straight out of the Middle East or Africa, with halal butchers, kebab stands, Al Jazeera blaring on TV and Arabic on signs everywhere. Arabic is the language spoken by men who hang out in the barbershop at the strip mall and by the mothers in hijabs quietly exhorting their children to get ready for school.
Kasem Mohammed sits with his friends in a coffee shop in the Centrum, a huge concrete shopping centre.
Slight and wiry, he was a shopkeeper in his native Somalia but has been unable to find a steady job in his seven years here. "We're all jobless and on welfare," he says.
As a father of four, he is the first to admit life is not all bad here. There are programmes that help immigrant women to work and encourage kids to explore the rest of Malmö,. There's a sports centre where a coach teaches kids to box and lots of social workers.
At the same time, there is a sense of menace in Rosengård. Just a few blocks from the Centrum is an area known for its poverty, drug dealers, violence and guns. On one side are crumbling, cockroach-ridden tenements that are owned by absentee landlords; because of a long-standing mould problem, residents must go outside to trailers equipped with toilets, sinks and showers in order to relieve themselves, even in the middle of the night. A burnt-out car sits abandoned on the street.
This is where a riot began in 2008, sparked when authorities sent police dogs and heavily armed officers into the basement of a privately owned building that locals were using as a mosque. There were riots again in 2009 and 2010 with cars and kiosks set on fire. The mobs were young, disaffected and volatile, texting their friends to come and join the fight against the police "whores" and "pigs". Many were gang members. Some of their families have lived in Rosengård for two generations, stuck in overcrowded apartments and knowing no other way of life.
They were kids just like the group hanging out today during school hours in front of a local convenience store - kids like Abdel Bekkar, 17, a shaven-headed Palestinian who saunters over to ask, "You police?"
In this part of town, you can score a gram of hashish in less than three minutes and harder drugs in under five. "A lot of people sell drugs here but they are good people," Bekkar says.
“WE’RE ALL JOBLESS AND ON WELFARE”    Kassem Mohammed, father of four
His friend, Kamal El-Takach, 22, whose parents are from Lebanon, says that the Swedish public treats him and his friends with disdain and discrimination As soon as companies glimpse any name that seems vaguely Arabic, they don't even call you in for an interview. So they look for other ways to make a living. "We are on our own."
With an outbreak of gang-related shootings that started in June. 2011, Malmö, has developed the reputation as being Scandinavia's Chicago, a reference to the dark days of gangsters and Al Capone. In January 2012 alone there were six shootings, three of them fatal. Most involved gangs and immigrants, including a 15-year-old boy who was watching New Year's Eve fireworks when he was shot five times in the chest and once in the head.
His murder spurred thousands to march in central Malmö,, chanting "Where are the police? Where is the safety?" If a kid with no criminal record or gang affiliation could be killed, no-one was safe.

It's not just that there is more crime here, compared to other Scandinavian cities. It also tends to be more violent. Last year, Sweden's National Council on Crime Prevention reported that in 2011, guns were used in 13 cases per 100,000 residents, compared with four in the country's capital, Stockholm.
This is hardly news to Goran Holmgren. Tall and thoughtful, the deputy police chief of the Rosengård precinct says violent crime here goes in explosive cycles, depending partly on the number of police assigned to the area. The guns are smuggled in across the Øresund Bridge that connects Malmö, to Denmark. There is no permanent customs post at the entry to Sweden because there are not enough police to staff it, Holmgren says. "Think of it as a free-for-all, where you can bring in anything you like and sell it here for much higher prices than you paid for it."
With all the unemployment, guns, drugs, and discrimination, you would think there would be plenty for Swedes to talk about in order to find a solution. But few people want to confront uncomfortable topics in this polite, politically correct country. They are, if not complacent, then benignly tolerant, unquestioning of other cultures' values - and that has opened the door to what Swedish journalist and author Lars Aberg calls a "nice racism".
"Listen to the radio or TV or open a newspaper and you immediately know what the angle of a story will be: be nice to people who are not like yourself," says Aberg, who has written extensively about immigration and integration. "You can feel very nice about yourself this way. We even tolerate people whose behaviour we don't like! You think you are treating people the same. You stay silent."

Erik Ullenhag, Integration Minister, Liberal People’s Party
Into this silence has stepped the extremist Swedish Democrat Party. Considered little more than a fringe neo-Nazi movement when it was founded in 1988, it has positioned itself as a champion of the voiceless, willing to tackle bluntly the sensitive topic of immigrants and refugees. In the 2010 election, it won 5.7% of the national vote, enough to get it 20 of the 349 seats in parliament. In the Malmö, area, it polled nearly double that: 10%. With a platform that, in its anti-Muslim overtones, reflects those of other far-right movements in Europe, it calls for the entire immigration and refugee system to be revamped.
"Why should refugees get free healthcare and special programmes? Why should they be allowed to live wherever they want rather than settle in areas that actually need workers?" asks Lars-Johan Hallgren, a local Swedish Democrat Party leader who is an honorary chairman on Malmö,'s city council and a member of the regional parliament. Tall, didactic and well-dressed with blunt-cut brown hair, Hallgren sounds affronted as he tries to explain his beliefs. "It's hard for people to get jobs these days, whether your name is Lars or Mohammed," he says. "Right now, we have nearly 500,000 people unemployed in Sweden!"
Anja Sonesson, who as a rival Malmö, councillor often crosses swords with Hallgren at city hall meetings, agrees that the traditional approach is not working. Instead, it has helped foster the belief that immigrants are takers who prefer to be on social welfare. "If we're going to accept people from other countries, we need to have people coming to start their own companies here and employing others. We have to accept a different class of immigrant, like Canada and the US, or else we'll be in big trouble."
At the national level, Sweden's centre-right coalition government knows that more trouble is coming unless they do some fixing - fast. In 2010, it introduced an employment programme titled "Self-Obligation with Professional Help", which means the emphasis will shift from all-encompassing help for refugees upon arrival to jobs, jobs and more jobs. Now, immigrants will be permitted to work while they are learning Swedish. "You can work as a janitor without speaking the language fluently," says Integration Minister Erik Ullenhag of the reforms. "I have never met one asylum seeker who says 'I want to live on welfare.' They say 'I want to have something to do.'"
Another major shift is in the schools: until recently, the children of immigrants and refugees have been automatically placed in classes with their age peers, regardless of their proficiency in Swedish. The intention was to be inclusive, but many of these children - kids who've never spoken anything other than their native languages - can't keep up. Now their academic levels are being assessed before they are placed. Tutoring and special classes are given as needed.
Despite Sweden's attempts to attract more monied, educated immigrants, Ullenhag insists the country will not abandon its moral duty to provide refugees with a safe haven. "We stand for acceptance," he says.
Back in Malmö's main library, Rehman and Ask walk away with a better appreciation of each other. The filmmaker was shaken by the implicit racism that Rehman encountered. It sounds simplistic, he knows, but could not plain words bring more understanding? Why not even expand the Living Library programme to the city's squares so that people can bring their stories to a larger audience?
"If people don't talk to each other, they will continue to fear each other," he says. "That's not good for Malmö, and it's not good for Sweden."

[4th COMMENT: In Australia, also, the same crazy policy of putting children into classes though they don't understand the work has been going on for some years.  It is the "politically correct" or "PC" thing to do - no child must feel s/he has failed, all must feel they have succeeded!  Readers: Please contact the Webmaster if you have evidence that in Australia there are children put into classes with their age peers, even if their English is poor or non-existent.  ENDS.]

[One is in prison, all three's minds are imprisoned]

Letter SENT TO The Editor, The West Australian, ( letters § wanews com au ), Friday, May 3, 2013
Dear Sir,
My sympathy goes out to Shayden (in jail) and Junaid Thorne, both in Saudi Arabia, and their mother in Australia.
The saddest part of the article (WA man 'fell foul of Saudis', 3/5) was the statement in the eighth paragraph, of the brother who is still free there.
"I have many faults," Mr Junaid Thorne is reported to have said. The faults were: He does not wear a beard, he dresses in shorts, he has relationships with girls, and he listens to music.
Well, I am sad for the fact that if that is his belief, his mind is imprisoned by the culture, and it seems his brother's and mother's are too.
Might I add to the list of "sins" that this culture thinks Australians are committing?
Keeping pet dogs, having a picture in the house, eating ham or pork, mixed-gender swimming, wearing bathers, receiving interest on saving accounts, gambling, drinking alcohol, and women leaving their homes without a responsible male accompanying them.
Also, it is forbidden to honour the sacred buildings and suchlike of other faiths, to honour their relgiious festivals, or to befriend or obey people of other faiths.
Yes, we ought to feel pity for the victims of this kind of repressive thinking. #

[KORAN (= Islamic scripture): (said to be the same book, spoken by an angel Gabriel, as on tablets (or, the preserved slate) kept by the god Allah in Heaven):

  Labor's illegal boat arrivals. 40,783;    = $10+ Billion

Labor's illegal boat arrivals

Labor's illegal boat arrivals.  The numbers: Total arrivals 40,783; Total boats 674.
   Year by year:- 2008-09 - people arriving 1037, boats 23;  2009-10 - 5614, 117;  2010-11 - 4949, 89;  2011-12 - 8311, 112;  so far in 2012-13 - 20,872 arrivals, 333 boats, .
The cost:  Under Labor 674 illegal boats = $10+ billion of your taxes wasted on illegal boat arrival cost blow-outs.  That's money that should have gone to improving hospitals, schools and roads.
Every illegal boat is costing you $12.8 million. (Average for 2011-12).  (Authorised by Luke Simpkins MP, Shop 3, Kingsway Shopping Centre, Madeley, WA, 6065.  14 May 2013)  He is the MHR for Cowan electorate.
[DEFINITION: "Billion" in most Australian publications around the year 2013 means 1000 million (not the million million of the past, and in at least one country overseas).]
[COMMENT:  The number of illegal "invaders" who receive permission to stay, and later to become citizens, that is, voters, is well over 75 per cent.  Opponents of changing Australia's present culture will, at this rate, be beaten in elections, through the stupidity of the "chattering classes" for not refusing voting rights to all who arrive without valid passports, and their children.  If, say, 80 per cent of undocumented "asylum seekers" have been granted entry to Australia, they could all obtain citizenship within five years, and then invite their relations to come legally to Australia - "family reunion".  About a quarter of a million new voters could easily be added to the electoral rolls within ten years.  Political candidates would then start to be careful what they said about immigration, halal killing, child marriages, genital mutilation, etc.
Evidently the chatterers and the politicians can't see why Fiji keeps having coups - the indigenous Fijians are being outvoted by the descendants of Indian people brought in through the past greed of British business-people during colonial times, and the military periodically seize power to prevent the takeover of the indigenous people's farms, shops, factories, etc.
To return to the illegal boat arrivals, Australia is also receiving high numbers of temporary visa holders and overseas students, flooding the labour market for entry-level jobs.  In late August 2013 it was reported that an academic person pointed out this other diminution of Australians' rights.  He said that this was crowding out young Australians from getting a start in employment.   COMMENT ENDS.]
[EXPLANATION: The face of former Prime Minister Julia Gillard is on the card, presumably because she was Labor PM then, not being overthrown until later by Kevin Rudd.]   ENDS.]

‘You will never be safe’: UK killer

‘We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you.’
   The West Australian, <>, ( letters ¶ wanews com au ), <>, from AAP, 5:05 am, May 23, 2013
One of the men behind a barbaric terror attack on the streets of London has been filmed wielding a bloodied meat cleaver and saying, "We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you."
The black man, dressed in a grey hooded jacket and black woolly hat, apologises to members of the public, who witnessed the horrific scenes before making a number of political statements.
A man believed to be a serving British soldier was brutally murdered on Wednesday in what Prime Minister David Cameron says appears to be a terrorist attack.
In the footage, obtained by ITV News, he is heard to say: "We must fight them as they fight us. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
"I apologise that women have had to witness this today, but in our land our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don't care about you."
Over his shoulder, a group of onlookers can be seen just a few steps from the victim.
Traffic, including an articulated truck, stopped on the carriageway, metres from the figure lying in the road.
As people stand aghast at the terrifying scene unfolding in front of them, one woman is seen pulling her shopping trolley along behind her, seemingly oblivious to the horror.
As the man finishes addressing a few members of the public, he turns back towards the victim lying on his side in the road, then talks to a second man.
A blue car is parked on the pavement, a short distance from the victim in the road.
It has significant damage to its front, with debris and markings on the walkway.
ITV's footage then cuts to two men being detained by police on the ground nearby, while passers by mill around just behind them. Some are filming the drama as it unfolds on camera phones before being shepherded away by officers. #

Syrian priest can’t believe the violence

   The Record (R.C. Perth, W. Australia, weekly), http:// , p 8, Wednesday, June 5, 2013
SYRIA:  For Jesuit Father Nawras Sammour, the ongoing conflict in Syria is a professional challenge and a personal heartache. Father Sammour is Jesuit Refugee Service's regional director for the Middle East and lives in Damascus, Syria.
He was born in Aleppo, and his mother, brother and sister still live there, but his nieces and nephews "have all left."
Tens of thousands of Syrians have died and millions have been displaced in more than two years of fighting between President Bashar Assad's government and rebels seeking his resignation.
"Sometimes I can't believe we Syrians have reached that level of violence," Father Sammour said. "We need to step back and realise that we went too far," he told Catholic News Service on May 31.
In a situation that is so tense and so divided, particularly among different Muslim groups, Father Sammour said Syria's small Christian communities may be frightened.
But with Christian aid programs and partnerships with others providing assistance, they also enjoy a certain respect as non-partisans looking only to help others. #

[COMMENT: The small Syrian Christian communities ought to be frightened, very frightened.  Islam considers them infidels, and infidels are supposed to be slain.   COMMENT ENDS.]

Hip-hop, poetry, singers, classical music to star in Muslim event

   The Sacramento Bee (newspaper of Sacramento, capital of California, U.S.A.), <http://www.>, <http://www.2013/06/15/5498542/hip-hop-poetry-singers-classical.html>, By Stephen Magagnini ( ), Last Modified: Tuesday, Jun. 18, 2013 - 9:05 am; Published: Saturday, Jun. 15, 2013 - 12:00 am | Page 1B
Muslim hip-hop artists, poets, singers and classical musicians will perform today at the Crest Theatre in "An Islamic Expression of Traditional & Contemporary Art."
The event – perhaps the first of its kind in the nation – challenges the belief among some orthodox Muslims that music can lead to sinful behavior.
"It's kind of risky. It's something we have not done before," said Imam M.A. Azeez of Salam Islamic Center, which organized the evening at the Crest. "It represents a paradigm shift in the Muslim community. Kids are listening to this stuff, so why not be proactive and expose them to beautiful, inspiring music that promotes love of religion and country?"

The imams of Sacramento's two biggest mosques declared that music is not permissible according to the Prophet Muhammad, Allah's messenger.
"It's a chain reaction – when people listen to music, they ask for alcohol, which will lead to adultery," said Imam Mahmoud Abdel of Masjid Annur Islamic Center. "One step leads to another in the majority of cases. It's well known that anybody who listens to music a lot will be distracted from his or her mission, which is worshipping God Almighty."
Imam Mumtaz Qasmi of Sacramento's Downtown Mosque said there's not a mosque in the world that allows music. "So how can we allow it outside the mosque?" he asked.
The only instrument the Prophet Muhammad allowed was a tabla, or drum, and not more than two at a time, Qasmi said.
The tabla – which will be played at the Crest – "can make you feel relaxed, but nowadays there are hundreds of instruments, and music actually makes you high, 100 percent," Qasmi said. "Music has magic, it gets in your blood and makes you want to get up and dance and forget your personality. Your butt is shaking and she's going to get up and her butt is going to shake – where is the religion then?"

Azeez said there will be no dancing at the Crest performances. Ever since he was a boy in Egypt, he said, he has run into clerics who think "there's something wrong with music and people's natural desires and inclinations to enjoy music and poetry – there's a belief that it is synonymous with sin."
He recalls his parents listening "to the greatest singer in the Muslim world, Oum Kolthoum, even though the imam at our mosque said it's not permissible."
Waterfalls, winds and birds all make music, Azeez said. "Why would God [Allah] be angry with the beautiful sounds of nature? There's nothing conclusive in the Quran that states music is inherently wrong."
There are stories of how political leaders used singers to sway people from following the Quran, or settings where music was performed "and really bad things took place, like the inappropriate mingling of genders, drinking or fornication," Azeez said.
Songs that have profanity or objectify women and dances meant to highlight sexuality aren't acceptable, Azeez said. "Why not present an alternative? Instead of listening to rap music filled with filth, why not listen to clean rap?"

There's no Muslim-world consensus on music, said community leader Rashid Ahmed, a former president of the Downtown Mosque.
"Music certainly has the power to change your state of mind like drugs, and can motivate you to do things you might not normally do," Ahmed said.
But the prohibition against music is not nearly as strict as that against alcohol or pork, Ahmed said. "Even the Prophet Mohammed allowed children to sing for him, and permitted music at weddings or other special celebrations."
Many Muslim countries, from Egypt to Iraq, boast pop stars with glitzy stage shows and huge followings.
In the Sufi Muslim tradition still going strong in Pakistan, India and other countries, music plays a central role in prayer, Ahmed said.
Still, the event at the Crest featuring Islamic rap, or strong social commentary, represents a break from standard Muslim practices, Ahmed said.
Event organizer Rihana Ahmad said the goal is to bridge the generation gap and show the community that all kinds of music from punk to traditional can be found in Islam nowadays.

• [Stop Canberra's new step to take over Local Government]

[Stop Canberra’s new step to take over Local Government]

[And thoughts on cultural instability]
An Intelligent Observer, Tuesday, July 9, 2013
I have read the proposal put forward by [name withheld] (27 Mar 2013). Yes; an investor could make money in land price speculation where rail and other infrastructures facilitate convenient living.
Although the average person could get rich from a growing population needing land for houses, it doesn't induce them to demand changes to bring about a land for revenue system. They are more interested in just the enjoyment of living.
Only those with vision and who can form a political party that can win government can achieve changes. The rules come from Parliament.
The Federal Government is trying to get control of local Government with a pretence that Local Government will receive Federal funding. It's the usual lies. The Feds don't produce revenue, they confiscate from the people by way of taxation. They intend to raise more revenue from State lands with tax, not rent. It will be a confiscating tax on both land and houses.
State Government could implement a land rent scheme for public revenue and not be in conflict with State or Federal constitutions. It could to a land rent, not a tax. Constitutionally, only the Federal Government can impose taxes; land is the property of each of the States. The States, constitutionally, should have been the revenue granters to the Federal Government; not the way it now is - tax on income and enterprise.
It's vital that the Feds don't get control of Local Government - they have been proved to be incompetent, fraudulent and cannot be trusted, no matter which political party.
No one owns land, they only occupy it. Land value is in the title of occupancy and is separate from any man-made items, such as buildings which have their own private values. Even with a land rent in place, there will be a value remaining in the title of occupancy. Henry George suggested leaving it there and collect the rent regardless. The rent is already in place and set by the Valuer General. Only a small part of it is being collected.
It would be better if Local Government retained land. Private enterprise could invest in developing areas with roads, water supply, electricity etc., receiving a return on their investment from Local Government as it collects land rent from house owners who have selected their land location.
The land would not be sold, so that a house would be easily affordable. The owner of a house sells the house only, not the land. The 'land occupancy title' would have to be returned to Local Government to avoid it being sold - something that needs closer thought.

A people who identify with each other to the degree of sufficient numbers to form a tribe or nation, occupy such areas of land that they can hold from others; maybe displacing previous occupiers to get it in the first place and can themselves be displaced as is happening to what is left of the white Australian Nation (about 4 million that have retained racial loyalty). The displacement of Aborigines is a blazing example; they were occupiers, not traditional owners.
The future is uncertain. Huge numbers of immigrants are planned for Australia. The more Australia's population grows the worse things seem to get, even with the large open spaces. What makes things worse is that there is no such thing as a multi-racial nation. What was once intended as a white-raced nation of Australia, is not likely to be recovered.
Being born on 'national territory' is not a birthright to membership of that occupying nation. Contingency plans are being considered to relocate white Australians that cannot assimilate with the now mixed races which will continue to become unstable. Henry George spoke more on the race question than the land question. ("Henry George" by Charles Baker).

Islam is on the march, seeking World conquest, so are Internationalists (sometimes called Communists - more updated, the Globalists). Islam is the most physically aggressive. The Middle East has huge numbers of manpower available to the Muslims.
Their Islamic religion gives them encouragement and is a religion that provides a unity to a multi-racial force that has a deep hatred of the white race of people. It has been their neurotic multi-racial cross breeding and their religious variations that has, so far, destabilised any organised attack of any large scale.
Their colonisation by immigration is proving the most successful, amazingly supported by weak minded whites, themselves the future victims. Christianity, distorted by interpretations of the New Testament, is a weakness, inviting invasion from a more aggressive and determined religious force.
America is currently planning and will link with Europe, both will abandon trying to compete with Asia, including India. A 'one world' defies the God-given laws of nature. There will be a major re-emergence of the Western European peoples, but that is sometime in the far future, after the race war. #

[GENERAL COMMENT: There is a lot of knowledge and wisdom in all of this article.  Any reader who doubts the facts presented above is welcome to use the Internet search engines such as Metacrawler to find confirmation of the author's statements.  Or go to a good library.   GENERAL COMMENT ENDS.]
["RACE WAR" COMMENT:  RACIST ARTICLE?  Stop and think.  When the Europeans gradually took charge of India, did they allow widow-burning and hand-chopping to continue?  The pirates of the north African Barbary Coast were eventually overcome by superior cannon - did the conquerors allow the inhabitants' customary way of becoming prosperous, piracy, to continue?  The modern Somali pirates are being deprived of their customary livelihoods belatedly by some navies.  Should all these peoples be permitted to resume their culturally-inherent customs?
On old maps, an island group used to be called the Cannibal Islands, and in the Torres Strait between Queensland and New Guinea young male islanders were not fully accepted as men until they had removed someone's head - read Headhunters of the Coral Sea and Drums of Mer by Ian Idriess.  But, when the Europeans conquered these places, were cannibalism and headhunting allowed, for cultural reasons?
NOT RACISM - the writer is objecting to CULTURAL DIFFERENCES that would change Australia from a land, for example, where Sunday used to be a day of rest, to a land where there would be executions on Friday, as it was in Afghanistan in recent times, and still is in some lands, and where polygamy and child marriage would be usual, "the norm," instead of being forbidden.
In the 1800s the Chinese immigrants to Australia and the Pacific coast of the United States were, according to some writers and the then labour movement, full of cultural customs that were forbidden by U.S. laws.  The U.S. passed its immigration restriction laws around the same time as Australia was moving towards its White Australia policy.
CULTURES are different.  It is NOT just a difference of race, skin colour, language, etc. that motivates most critics of the present influx of non-Europeans into Europe and countries whose populations now, through sometimes cruel invasions and other policies, are mainly European.
In fact, these societies have gradually changed to kinder societies, giving up the frequent executions, whippings, very long imprisonments, etc., that were common in Europe before and after the invasions began.
However, Europeans, in the main, outlaw polygamy, marrying off girls of 6 years (one of the cultures) or 9 years (another culture), cutting off part of girls' sexual organs without anaesthetic (on cultural grounds), burning widows with their husbands' bodies, lashing and gaoling women who do not cover themselves from face to feet, executions, mutilating thieves by de-handing them, beheading those who disobey their customs or criticise their past guru, etc.
Regarding immigrants, most countries until recent years believed in ASSIMILATION, that is, expecting the immigrants to adopt fairly quickly the language, clothing, and most customs of the majority culture-group, but practising some of their own culture quietly and semi-privately.
On the other hand, DIVERSITY and MULTI-CULTURALISM doctrines cannot make these opposing cultures settle down.  If the weekend break is Sunday for most, Saturday for a few, and Friday for an ever-increasing multitude of economic and other immigrants, will Australia end up with the Three-day Weekend?  Or will every business and restaurant be forced to close all day Friday, at the risk of violence?  Will every hotel and bar be put out of business?   RACE WAR COMMENT ENDS.]

Woman jailed for reporting she was raped

The Sunday Times (Perth, W. Australia), ( letters § sundaytimes newsltd com au ); p 38, Sunday, July 21, 2013
LONDON – THE identity of a Norwegian woman who was sentenced to 16 months in prison for extramarital sex after she reported being raped in Dubai has been revealed.
Marte Deborah Dalelv, 24, was brutally raped while on a business trip in the United Arab Emirates and was jailed for having sex outside of marriage after reporting it to police.
Ms Dalelv reported the sexual assault in March this year, after which she had to spend several days in a cell before she was allowed to use a telephone.
With the help of family members, the Norwegian consulate was able to negotiate a release and she had been living under the protection of the Norwegian Sailors Church until her sentencing this week.
"I received the harshest sentence for sex outside marriage, harshest sentence for drinking alcohol and om top of that I was found guilty of perjury," she told Verdens Gang newspaper.
"It is a terrible situation she is in," said Gisle Meling, the priest at the Norwegian Sailors Church. "We are very surprised and had hoped it would go another way, but we live in a country which has a justice system which draws its conclusions with the help of Sharia law."
Ms Dalelv was sentenced to one year and four months in jail, but as Norway has no extradition treaty with Dubai her future is uncertain.
[Picture: No win: Marte Deborah Dalelv, 24, from Norway, has been sentenced after reporting her rape.
The Norwegian woman's story is not unique.
Earlier this year Australian Alicia Gali, 27, spoke of how she was thrown in a Dubai jail for eight months after she reported a rape.
Miss Gali was working at hotel chain Starwood when her drink was spiked in the staff bar.
She awoke to find that three colleagues had raped her, but when she went to a hospital for help, they turned her over to the police and she was charged with illicit sex outside marriage.
Under UAE law, rapists can only be convicted if either the perpetrator confesses or if four adult Muslim males witness the crime.
Under the Sharia-influenced laws, sex before marriage is forbidden and an unmarried couple holding hands in public can be jailed.
Foreigners jailed in Dubai are deported immediately after completing their sentences.
British couple Ayman Najafi and Charlotte Adams were jailed for a month in 2010 for a kiss. #

[COMMENT:  Well, that is about as logical as cutting off a hand or hands of a thief, thus rendering her/him less likely to earn an honest living.  But, then, logic is not part of this culture.
Believe it or not, if a Muslim man grabs a woman in what he perceives to be a warlike situation, he can pretend he has "married her" by even giving her a garment beforehand as the "bride gift."  And, once she has been "married," she has to be obedient, or face a scourging.  And, the man will divorce her by just dismissing her.  Strange, but true.  COMMENT ENDS.]

[KORAN (said to be the same book as on tablets (or, the preserved slate) kept by the god Allah in Heaven):
4:15 (or 4:14, or 4:19):- If any of your women be guilty of whoredom, then bring four witnesses against them from among yourselves; and if they bear witness to the fact, shut them up in their houses till death release them, or Allah make some way for them.    SCRIPTURE ENDS.]

[COMMENT on the SCRIPTURE: For those who do not study this subject deeply, this is one (giving the four witnesses doctrine) of the contradictory rules in the Mohammedan religion for dealing with sex outside marriage (which, itself, is a very flexible concept if one reads even more deeply).  The doctrine has been added to (just as other religions add to the original doctrines) to define it as male witnesses, and elsewhere in the religious writings, instead of locking the women up (no mention of the man here!), she is to be stoned to death, a cruel death.
The Hadith traditions have the variant of stoning the male to death, and in another teaching, scourging him.  But, of course, all this is forgotten in the case of the Prophet who in 33:50 is told it is lawful for him to have wives, plus "those your right hand possesses" – that is, prisoners taken by force.  A flexible set of "morals" indeed.   ENDS.]

• Nerve gas: Who makes and sells it ?
          –         –         –
Letter SENT TO The Editor, The Australian, 2 Holt St, Surry Hills, NSW 2010; September 1, 2013
Congratulations to the British House of Commons for passing a resolution against another fruitless war, this time against oil-rich Syria.
President Obama is working himself into a lather to send the United States of America into battle, but I notice he is not volunteering to lead the first wave of attackers.
Before the US and Australia rush into another illegal war, perhaps the leaders ought to declare open season on whatever companies make the nerve gas, and what [the] companies and countries [that] export it to the world's trouble spots.
Are these factories in Russia, France, Britain, the USA, or where?  Is it exported from Turkey, Iran, Israel, Egypt, or where?  Of the various factions in Syria, which ones are importing nerve gas?
Readers ought to look at websites like the Campaign Against the Arms Trade before they get too excited about the political spin being put on whatever horrors are happening in Syria.
Judging by the lies told before Iraq (no evidence of weapons of mass destruction) was illegally attacked, and the refusal by the occupying forces to leave that country (oil rich, like Syria), and Afghanistan (Osama Bin Laden has been caught, we were told in four conflicting versions, so the excuse to stay there as unwilling guests is threadbare), there will be no proof of what happened in Syria.
The nerve gas could possibly have been fired in a "false flag" attack by agents of Israel, Iran, Russia, the USA, or Britain, to name but a few.  Yes, Westerners have been helping fuel ethnic and religious tensions for hundreds of years, history tells us, and so have non-Westerners.  #

Leaflets, books, and cassettes calling for jihad in Afghanistan and insisting on ejecting all non-Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula were given out freely.  I was one of the youths recruited to distribute them.  A 22-year-old man was among those fighting for jihad.  His name was Osama bin Laden.  Such were the heroes of our time.  In the days of sahwa – al-Sahwa al-Islamiyya, or "the Islamic Awakening" – one of the main subjects of debate was women.  I was taught that if I left home, I would be fully responsible for any evil that befell me, because men cannot be expected to control their instincts.  I am the seductive fruit, they said, and I would seduce men in all my shapes and forms.  So I was made to stay home.
For Saudi extremists I was awra.  The word awra means a sinful thing,

• Call to end mutilation  [It is child abuse, say UK experts.]

Call to end mutilation

   New Scientist (Britain), p 4, 9 November 2013
Female genital mutilation of young girls is child abuse. © UK Government TREAT female genital mutilation as child abuse and act accordingly.  That's the message of a report launched in the UK this week calling for a concerted effort by school nurses, doctors and other health workers to help eradicate a procedure that has been illegal in the country since 1985, but which has never resulted in a prosecution.
Previous research has shown that female genital mutilation (FGM) causes excruciating pain and can cause haemorrhage and infection as well as raising the risk in later life of infertility and potentially fatal complications during childbirth.
The aim of the report is to support the estimated 66,000 women in England and Wales who have undergone the procedure, and to prevent it in the 24,000 girls under the age of 15 who are deemed at risk of being mutilated.
"Health visitors see every child up to the age of 5, school nurses monitor children after that, midwives see pregnant mothers who may have undergone the procedure, and now for the first time these health professionals have agreed to share information on FGM," says Gerald Chan, of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, who co-authored the report, Tackling FGM in the UK.
"From now on there will be robust mechanisms for health professionals to refer cases to the appropriate authorities," says Chan.
The measures don't go as far as those taken by some other countries.  In France, for example, all girls unde six are screened for mutilation.   Illustration: <http://www.uk/fgm> #

[COMMENT:  It's child abuse, with a cultural base, tolerated by religious leaders.  Or is that a politically incorrect inference?  Perhaps not, because good women must be obedient, says the scripture.   COMMENT ENDS.]
